White Island

Join us for the experience of a lifetime, walking on the active crater floor of New Zealand’s only active marine volcano, White Island. Departing from the Rotorua City Lakefront, your helicopter flight takes in stunning aerial views of lakes, forests, and orchards before crossing the Bay of Plenty coastline on track to White Island. Upon your approach, you’ll marvel from the skies as steam billows upward from the island’s crater. After touching down, your knowledgeable pilot will then take you on a guided tour of the crater floor, exploring all around the island at a leisurely pace. Highlights include active volcanic vents, hot streams, abandoned mining ruins and White Island’s gigantic crater lake.

The return flight journeys back over the Pacific Ocean abound with sea life before landing back at the Rotorua City Lakefront.

Fantastic Experience

“Wow, where to start? Checking in at the office was great, the team at Volcanic Air made us feel welcome and very comfortable. Sensible safety talk and well balanced. Our great pilot and guide Charlotte made the flight and tour fantastic. Very well informed of the local area and the influences of the terrain. After a pleasant flight, we approached the volcano and had time for photographs.

Landing on the volcano was smooth, and we were given hard hats and masks. As we hiked around the volcano, the key features were pointed out to us, with the islands history being unveiled as we progressed on the tour. Taken to the crater, we were rewarded with a view of the lake as the mist cleared. Charlotte ensured that we kept our enthusiasm in check and did not allow us too near to the edge! We were then taken to various fumeroles and water and mud pools bubbling away. After that we went to the old factory and more of the history was revealed to us. There was plenty of time to explore, with a great balance of information. Back on the helicopter we traveled back to the main land and more key features were shown. Great experience, highly recommended. Thanks to the whole team at Volcanic Air.”

One of the greatest highlights of my entire experience of travel in over 70 countries

“The flight out to the coast from Rotorua is brilliant enough, but approaching and landing on White Island is out of this world. Exploring the crater on foot is interesting, unusual and other-worldly. So accessible in this way, and yet so remote from one’s normal experience. We were blessed with a beautiful cloudless day for our flight which added to our enjoyment. Our pilot was terrific, constantly engaged with her passengers in addition to her obviously experienced flying skills. She also acted as the guide for our walk. Great kudos to her.

Without a doubt, this flight was one of the greatest highlights, not just of our month-long New Zealand trip, but also of my entire experience of travel to over 70 countries.”

I’ve been to the moon!!!

“We did the White Island tour and it was amazing. You feel like you are on another world. The steam, smells and colours I have not experienced before. The helicopter pilot acts as your guide and is very helpful. You walk to the top and look down into a steaming volcanic lake. Love it!”
